Description

One of the most recognizable landscapes in the United States: Monument Valley, on the Utah and Arizona State Line. It’s also one of the most photographed regions in this part of the country. Monument Valley is a part of the Colorado Plateau, partly within the Navajo Indian Reservation. It is famed for the immense (up to 1000ft tall) sandstone Buttes and Mesas. These huge stratified towers were formed through extensive erosion of the Cutler Red Siltstone basin, rich in iron oxide (creating the red colour). The area is home to the famous Merrick Butte; and the East and West Mittens. These rock beasts, in addition to the Three Sisters and the Rain God Mesa have featured in many Clint Eastwood Westerns, and the more contemporary (how old am i?) Back to the Future.
